Anavar, the brand name for oral steroid Oxandrolone, was first introduced by the drug manufacturer Searle in 1964. This steroid was designed to be used as a safe growth stimulant in children but soon gained prominence as a potent weight loss drug.

The primary medical uses of anabolic-androgenic steroids are to treat delayed puberty, some types of impotence and wasting of the body caused by HIV infection or other diseases.
